At least 12 people have died in a small plane crash in Honduras, Agence France-Presse reported, citing local authorities.
There were a total of 18 people on board the plane, including 15 passengers and three crew members. The tragedy occurred on the island of Roatan, in northern Honduras. The plane veered right and left the runway during takeoff, then ended up in the sea.
The plane was flying to La Ceiba, on the mainland of Honduras. Among the victims is the popular Honduran musician Aurelio Martinez, a member of the local Garifuna community.
A 40-year-old French citizen was injured in the crash.
According to initial investigation data, the crash was apparently due to a mechanical defect in the British-made Jetstream aircraft.
After hitting the water, the plane sank to a great depth and divers were involved in the search and rescue operation.
The island of Roatan is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Honduras.
