In 2023, there were 3,930 intentional murders recorded by the police in the EU. This is an increase of 1.5% compared to 2022, according to the latest data from “Eurostat“, reported SIR (Servizio Informazione Religiosa).
However, there has been a slight downward trend in the last decade, with a decrease of 15.2% compared to 2013 (when 4,635 were recorded). This statistic includes intentional murders, including terrorist attacks and the murder of women. The statistics do not include abortions and murders in self-defense.
The highest number of intentional homicides was recorded in France (887), followed by Germany (661) and Italy (338), while the lowest were in Malta (2), Luxembourg (4) and Cyprus (10). In Bulgaria, data shows that 74 intentional homicides were committed in 2023.
There has been a huge increase in sexual violence in the EU, according to data from “Eurostat“. From 2013 to 2023, the number of crimes related to sexual violence, including rape, registered by the police in the EU showed a steady increase, reaching a 79.2% increase in 2023 compared to 2013.
In 2023 243,715 crimes of sexual violence (including 91,370 rapes) were registered, which shows an increase of 5.5% (including a 7% increase in rapes) compared to 2022.
