The co-chairs of the “Alternative for Germany“ (AfD) said they would take legal action against the classification of the party as an “extremist organization“ by the domestic intelligence service, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
“AfD is being publicly discredited and criminalized shortly before the change of government“, Alice Weidel and Tino Krupala wrote in a statement. They added that the party "will continue to defend itself legally against these defamatory allegations that threaten democracy."
The classification, announced earlier today, gives the domestic intelligence service the right to closely monitor the AfD. The decision came just days before the inauguration of the Christian Democratic Union's (CDU) chancellor nominee Friedrich Merz and amid heated debate about how to deal with the AfD in the new parliament, Reuters noted.
