Access to the account of jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the main political rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been blocked in Turkey in response to a court request, a message on his social media account said on Monday, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
Police detained Imamoglu on March 19, sparking the biggest protests in Turkey in a decade. He was remanded in custody four days later to await trial on corruption charges, which he denies.
Opposition parties called his arrest politicized and anti-democratic. Imamoglu's account in Aix has nearly 10 million followers.
Prominent Turkish lawyer Gönenç Gürkaynak said in Aix that he was filing an objection to the court's decision to block access to the account at Aix's request. Details of the decision were not immediately available.
Opinion polls show that public support for Imamoglu has increased further since his arrest at the expense of that for Erdogan, reinforcing the belief that he will be Erdogan's main rival in the next presidential election, which is expected to be held in 2028, the agency noted.
