Norway announced on Monday its intention to strengthen security cooperation with Nordic countries and key European allies in response to the resurgent threat from Russia, Reuters reports, BTA reports.
In its first-ever national security strategy, the Norwegian government emphasizes that NATO remains central to the country's defense policy. At the same time, the document notes that changes in US policy on trade and security issues have led to greater unpredictability in transatlantic relations.
„The relationship between the United States and Europe has undergone a change… "Unconventional and confrontational approaches, including drastic changes in trade policy, have introduced significant uncertainty," the strategy says. It also notes that "the presence of US troops in Europe cannot be considered guaranteed."
This new approach marks a significant change in the traditionally pro-Atlantic foreign policy of Norway - a country that has long been among the closest US allies within NATO.
According to the strategy, Norway will maintain its strategic ties with the US, but will reorient some of its priorities towards closer cooperation with other European countries.
Oslo plans to deepen its defense and political relations with both its Scandinavian neighbors and countries such as Britain, France, Germany and Poland. It will also seek closer coordination with the Baltic countries - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the official statement says.
