80% tariffs on Chinese goods look good, US President Donald Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social.
In his post, Trump stressed that China should open its market to the US because closed markets no longer work, and that would be good for Beijing. He added that matters are in the hands of US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant.
The president's statement comes a day before talks between the two countries in Geneva, which will be led by Besant and Chinese economist and Vice Premier He Lifeng, are expected to be the first step towards resolving the trade war.
We recall that Trump imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, and China responded with a 125% tariff.
On April 25, the US president said that Chinese President Xi Jinping had called him and that his administration was negotiating with Beijing to conclude a tariff deal. China denied these allegations, although it has canceled some of the tariffs on US imports of certain semiconductors, medicines and ethane imports.
