Donald Trump's Mistakes! Four Steps to Restart the Failed Policy on the War in Ukraine - 1

Despite all of US President Donald Trump's promises to quickly end the war in Ukraine, his approach has failed. If he now refuses to mediate in peace talks, the result will be "an endless continuation of a brutal war, constant threats to Ukraine's territory, sovereignty, and democracy, and another blow to Trump's dream of appearing as a diplomatic mediator", writes Foreign Policy.

However, there is an alternative solution that should satisfy the American leader, the publication writes. That is, to show Russia what it will lose if it continues on its current path.

"Trump would be wiser to test the hypothesis that even a little more pressure on Moscow - without the need for the massive US financial commitments he opposes - could help end the war," the article says.

Four steps to reboot Trump's failed policies

According to the FP, Trump could support a new bipartisan package of sanctions against Russia, developed in the Senate, to increase economic pressure on Moscow. The Russian economy is already under great pressure, with growth supported only by military spending, persistent double-digit inflation and 21 percent interest rates. The collapse in oil prices will cause even more pain, and the prospect that Trump could exacerbate that pain with additional energy sanctions will give Putin pause.

Step Two

Trump could order the Pentagon to spend the remaining $3.8 billion in U.S. stockpiles that Congress has already authorized under the presidential authorization for cuts to Ukraine on defense goods and services.

"A new package – or even a threat to direct new tranches of aid to Ukraine until a deal is reached – not only would it buy Ukraine time on the battlefield, but it would also send a signal to Putin that the United States is not ready to abandon Ukraine, as Russia hopes and expects.“

Step Three

Trump could accelerate efforts to improve Ukraine’s air defenses.

"Additional air defense assets would not only help limit civilian casualties in Ukrainian cities, but would also protect energy infrastructure and give Ukraine greater resilience in the face of continued Russian attacks, thereby dashing Putin’s hopes that the Ukrainians will collapse,“ the publication believes.

Step Four

Trump could try to reach an agreement with the Europeans to strengthen Ukraine with training, weapons and funding.

Of course, there is no guarantee that even These steps will force Putin to compromise or abandon his maximalist goals, as he believes he can outlast the West, even at great cost, and Trump's victory and his abandonment of Ukraine, he believes, have confirmed the wisdom of this gamble, Foreign Policy notes:

"But now that Trump's initial approach has failed, he still has time to try another one - without having to cross a political red line by asking Congress for another big bill for additional spending on Ukraine.“

Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine

A day earlier, Trump made a statement regarding a possible meeting between Ukraine and Russia in Turkey. It could take place as early as Thursday, May 15. Trump said he was considering flying to Istanbul, where the Ukraine-Russia meeting is scheduled to take place, so he could possibly attend.

At the same time, US President's special envoy Steve Witkoff said Trump had threatened to withdraw from the settlement process if the parties to the conflict did not hold direct talks.
