The talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are essentially ridiculous because the two leaders are discussing the fate of a country that is not at the negotiating table.
This was stated by military analyst Michael Clarke to Sky News, commenting on the upcoming conversation between the presidents of the United States and Russia.
The Kremlin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump will hold a phone call today at 5:00 p.m. Moscow time (and Bulgarian time), RIA Novosti reported.
Trump and Putin are due to speak today, and Ukraine fears that any so-called peace deal the two create will actually be a “suicidal deal“.
Michael Clark said Ukraine risks being “divided“ in the phone call between Trump and Putin. He predicted that Kiev would be given impossible conditions, the Ukrainians would back down, and that would create a very difficult situation.
“The path we are heading towards is a division [of Ukraine]“, Clark said. He predicted that the phone call between the two leaders would lead them to discuss a summit.
Putin wants a quick summit to “get out of his pariah status“ - but the sooner one comes, the more pressure will be put on him to agree to a ceasefire.
“He will try to manipulate both the date and the terms of any summit he has with Trump to give him maximum leeway to keep fighting“.
