Temperatures in the small South American country dropped to minus 3 degrees Celsius due to a cold atmospheric front from Antarctica. This has led to the death of seven homeless people.
It is now the beginning of winter in Uruguay, but at this time of year the thermometers usually register much higher values - an average of 9 degrees minimum and 15 degrees maximum.
Still, things are gradually coming into place, as temperatures in the country with flat terrain and a relatively low latitude have already started to rise.
The country with a population of 3.4 million people is generally economically stable, but the number of homeless people has been methodically increasing in recent years. According to government data, they now exceed 2,700, with a large number of them living in the capital, Montevideo.
