A child died and six people were injured in a shooting last night in the American city of Indianapolis, Indiana, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.
The tragedy occurred at around 01:30 local time (05:30 GMT). An injured child was pronounced dead at the scene. Five injured were taken to hospital, and the sixth reached a medical facility on his own. Two of the injured are minors, local police reported.
„A child died tonight. "This is unacceptable," Indianapolis Police Chief Chris Bailey said, condemning the repeated violence in the city center, which has targeted young people. He also criticized parents for allowing "hundreds of children to be left unattended" in the city at night.
About two dozen people were arrested, and firearms, including an assault rifle, were seized from some minors.
According to Chris Bailey, several thousand people went to the city center to watch the Independence Day parade. Most left peacefully, but others "caused a riot."
Gun violence is common in the United States, where many states impose few restrictions on gun purchases, despite widespread public support for tighter controls, AFP notes.
