In the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, 8 people were killed and 34 injured in a stampede at a temple in the city of Haridwar, The Times of India reported.
Thousands of pilgrims were heading to the Mansa Devi temple, located on a hilltop. The narrow staircase leading to the temple was overloaded with people. According to preliminary data, panic began among the pilgrims when an electric cable fell. People began to run in different directions and a stampede began.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident. Tragic incidents during mass pilgrimages to temples and on religious routes are common in India. This year, 50 cases of stampede at religious events have already been registered.
