During his meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday, US President Donald Trump made it clear that tariffs on European export goods will not fall below the 15% threshold, Focus reports.
The statement was made at the beginning of the meeting, which took place at Trump's golf course in Turnberry, western Scotland. Trump stressed that the main problem in the negotiations is the issue of “fairness“, giving the example of the obstacles that American cars and agricultural products encounter when entering the European market.
Despite the difficulties, he expressed cautious optimism for progress on some issues. Asked if he could offer lower tariffs than 15%, Trump replied flatly: "If better means lower, no." He added that the chances of reaching a trade deal with the EU were even: "We'll probably find out in an hour," the president said.
