Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro to be placed under house arrest, "Reuters" agency reported, quoted by BNR.
Bolsonaro's lawyers announced they will appeal the decision.
Bolsonaro is on trial for conspiring to organize a coup d'état in 2022. The former head of state denies the charges. The judge in the case, Alexandre de Moraes, said the decision was because Bolsonaro had failed to comply with restraining orders imposed on him last month.
The former president will also now be banned from having visitors, unless they are his lawyers or people whose visits have been authorised by the court. Bolsonaro is also banned from using a mobile phone, either directly or through third parties.
The restrictions imposed on Bolsonaro are also linked to allegations that the former Brazilian president sought intervention from US President Donald Trump, who has described the trial against Bolsonaro as a "witch hunt". Trump recently used this as an excuse to impose a 50 percent tariff on some Brazilian goods, despite the fact that the United States has a trade surplus with Brazil, the BBC recalls.
