The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said five of its members were killed during an attack by "Islamic State" fighters on a checkpoint in the eastern Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor on July 31, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

"Islamic State" claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on Wednesday.

The SDF was the main fighting force acting as a U.S. ally in Syria during the fighting that defeated "Islamic State" in 2019, after the group declared a caliphate over vast swathes of Syria and Iraq.

"Islamic State" is trying to stage a comeback in the Middle East, the West and Asia. The city of Deir ez-Zor was captured by "Islamic State" in 2014, but the Syrian army recaptured it in 2017.

The Israeli military said early on Monday that it had intercepted a missile fired from Yemen after airstrike sirens were heard in several areas of the country, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The Iran-backed Houthi group, which controls the most densely populated parts of Yemen, has been shelling Israel and attacking sea lanes. The Houthis have repeatedly stated that their attacks are an act of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

Most of the dozens of missiles and drones they have launched have been intercepted or have failed to reach their targets.
