A hospital in eastern Germany has apologized after publishing a list of names of babies born in the maternity ward, which included that of Yahya Sinwar, the former leader of the Palestinian militant group "Hamas" in Gaza, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Sinwar is considered the organizer of the attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which 1,200 people died.
The obstetrics department of Leipzig University Hospital said that the names were published "exclusively at the request or with the consent of the parents".
"Today we published the first names of the newborns in our obstetrics department - as we do every day", the hospital said in a statement.
"We understand that today's publication has caused negative associations in some people", the team's statement on social media continues. They announced that the hospital would review its internal processes to handle such situations more delicately in the future.
The first name Yahya is widespread in Arabic-speaking countries and is considered the Muslim equivalent of John the Baptist, DPA reported.
Yahya Sinwar, a senior Hamas member who was once held in an Israeli prison, was killed by Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza last October, a year after Israel launched its war against Hamas following the terror attacks.
