Today, Chancellor Merz spoke with Zelensky to discuss the current development of the situation, after US special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During their meeting, the two discussed the war in Ukraine, a spokesman for the German Chancellery reported.
„The two leaders agreed to maintain close contacts with European partners and the United States,“ the spokesman added.
Chancellor Merz assured the Ukrainian president of Germany's continued support for Ukraine.
No further details of the conversation were released, but it took place ahead of an expected meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump, which Reuters said was likely to take place in the coming days.
