Tragedy in Kenya: Plane crashes in residential area of capital - 1

Two serious transport accidents rocked Kenya within a day, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more, BTA reports.

A small "Cesna" plane, used by the medical charity AMREF Flying Doctors, crashed in a densely populated area of the capital Nairobi. The plane was flying to Hargeisa, the capital of the breakaway Somaliland territory, when it crashed into buildings in the Githurai suburb, Citizen TV reported.

There were four passengers on board. According to a statement from AMREF, all were on a humanitarian mission. At least six people died in the incident, the organization and local authorities confirmed.

Witnesses described the moment of the crash as terrifying: they heard a loud rumble, followed by an explosion and a fireball, after which the neighborhood was covered in debris. Videos posted on social media showed firefighters battling flames among the remains of the plane. The authenticity of the footage has not yet been officially confirmed.

In a separate incident, in the city of Naivasha, in central Kenya, a train crashed into a passenger bus, killing at least six people, the Kenyan newspaper The Standard reported. According to local media, there are many injured, some of whom are in serious condition.

Small plane crashes are not uncommon in East Africa, Reuters notes. At the same time, frequent accidents involving road and rail vehicles call into question the effectiveness of transport safety systems in the region.
