The UN categorically opposes the expansion of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, DPA reported, quoted by BTA, referring to a statement last night by the deputy spokesman of the world organization Farhan Haq in New York.
"We are categorically against any escalation of the conflict", said Haq. "It is already extremely destructive", added the deputy spokesman of the UN.
According to Haq, the conflict has already caused "more than 60,000 casualties" in the nearly two-year-long fighting.
"There is a possibility of enormous human suffering, including potential starvation, which could worsen if the conflict escalates," the spokesman added.
His comments came as Israel's security cabinet met to discuss further steps in the war in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed support for a full takeover of the Gaza Strip despite resistance from military leaders who fear that escalating the fighting could endanger the lives of remaining hostages held by the Palestinian Islamist movement "Hamas".
