At least six Lebanese army soldiers were killed in an ammunition explosion near the city of Tyre in the southern part of the country, Al-Hadath TV channel reported, citing sources in the military command.
According to him, the detonation occurred when a unit of engineering troops was carrying out an operation to dismantle a weapons depot belonging to the Shiite militia „Hezbollah“. The facility was located in an underground shelter in the Wadi Zibkin area. Ambulances arrived at the scene of the incident to take the wounded soldiers.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. “With great pain we mourn the loss of the soldiers of our army in the south, who were fulfilling their national duty“, the statement published on the X social network said. The head of government stressed that the Lebanese Armed Forces remain “the reliable shield of the country and the bastion of its sovereignty“.
According to the news portal Lebanon 24, since the ceasefire agreement came into force on November 27, 2024, the Lebanese military has dismantled over 500 Hezbollah sites and controls most of the border areas south of the Litani River.
