Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that an unfair peace in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia will not be sustainable and will only encourage Russian forces to continue seizing Ukrainian territory, Reuters reported, referring to his post on social networks after his phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, BTA reports.
The conversation was initiated at the request of the Ukrainian president, the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey announced on “Facebook“. The two leaders discussed bilateral, regional and international issues.
“Imitative, not real peace will not last long and will only encourage Russia to seize even more territory“, Zelensky wrote on social networks after the conversation.
He also stressed: “They cannot make any decisions about Ukraine without us“ in connection with the planned meeting on Friday between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump, RBC-Ukraine reports. Zelensky expressed hope that Trump was aware of this and added that the meeting between the two leaders “could certainly be important for bilateral relations between the United States and Russia“.
The Ukrainian president is confident that a trilateral meeting between him, Putin and Trump will eventually take place to end the war in Ukraine, which has been going on for more than three years.
Trump and Putin are also interested in negotiations to end the conflict. The American president has repeatedly expressed a desire to end the bloodshed as soon as possible. At the same time, Trump said that he would not conclude an agreement with Putin on the war in Ukraine, since it is not his responsibility, DPA notes.
Ukraine has been defending itself for more than three years with the support of the West against a full-scale Russian invasion. However, Kiev's European allies and the Ukrainian leadership express concerns that Putin and Trump may make decisions without Ukraine's participation, Reuters writes.
