A tourist bus left the roadway and overturned in northwestern New York state, killing at least five people and injuring dozens, Reuters reported, citing local authorities.
According to the latest data, a child is among the victims, said state police spokesman James O'Callahan. Most of the passengers are Asian or of Asian descent. Among them are Chinese, Indians and Filipinos, O'Callaghan added.
The incident occurred on Interstate 90 about 30 miles east of Buffalo, while the bus was traveling from Niagara Falls to New York City.
O'Callaghan said the bus driver, who was traveling at "full speed," lost control and crashed into a guardrail, causing the vehicle to overturn. Some passengers were thrown from their seats, while others were trapped in the wreckage of the crashed vehicle. The driver survived and is currently assisting investigators.
Each of the 51 passengers suffered some kind of injury, the police spokesman added.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said on the social network "Ex" that police have confirmed that "five people have tragically lost their lives".
After the crash, authorities closed the highway in both directions.
