German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that the war in Ukraine could continue for a very long time. He commented on the end of the war in an interview with the ZDF television channel, Focus reports.
The German Chancellor said that he was ready for the possibility of the conflict dragging on. “We are trying to end it as quickly as possible. But definitely not at the cost of Ukraine's capitulation“, Merz emphasized.
According to him, the war could end tomorrow if Ukraine surrenders and loses its independence. “Only then in two days will the next country's turn come. And the day after that it will be our turn. This is not an option“, he said.
Earlier, Merz had already expressed his position that everyone wants the war to end, but not at any cost. He recently added that diplomatic efforts to end the conflict still face significant difficulties.
At the same time, most German citizens believe that their chancellor does not have the ability to exert significant influence on the US president on issues related to the war in Ukraine.
