US President Donald Trump reacted ironically to reports of technical problems on the plane of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, stating that she was thus deprived of the opportunity to use her phone, RIA Novosti reports, quoted by FOCUS.
He covered this today, September 2, during a briefing at the White House.
"They (the interference) also deprived her of the opportunity to use her phone. You know, sometimes that's a good thing. Sometimes it can happen to me, and I would be very happy“, Trump commented on the incident to journalists.
The American president also added that "nobody knows“ certainly what caused the problems.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov earlier said that the country's authorities would not investigate the fact that the GPS signal was interrupted on the plane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
EC spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen told a briefing on Monday that the plane carrying von der Leyen to the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv had a malfunction in its electronic navigation system while approaching the airport. According to Itkonen, the EC has received information from Bulgarian authorities that the damage was caused by “Russian interference“.
Russian President's spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier commented on the claim about Russia's alleged involvement in the incident, calling it “false information”.
Earlier, the Flightradar24 service said that despite the European Commission's (EC) statements about damage to the plane carrying the EC head, the plane's systems registered a good GPS signal throughout the flight, and the flight lasted only nine minutes longer than planned.
