Today is a day of national mourning in Portugal after 15 people died and another 23 were injured when a train from the popular Gloria funicular line in Lisbon derailed, BNR reported. Five of the injured are in serious condition.

The mayor of the Portuguese capital, Carlos Moedas, for his part, announced three days of local mourning for the tragedy. It is believed that there are also foreign citizens among the victims. So far, the information is about two injured Spaniards and a woman from South Korea.

President Marcelo de Sousa expressed condolences to the families of the victims and injured and expressed hope that the cause of the accident would be established soon.

The line, opened in 1885, connects the center of Lisbon with the "Bairro Alto" or "Upper Quarter", known for its lively nightlife. Its two carriages are attached to opposite ends of a cargo cable, with traction provided by the electric motors of the carriages.

Funicular lines are laid on steep slopes and are often tourist attractions.

According to initial data and footage on social networks, the train in Lisbon derailed while descending and hit a building. It had previously headed for the other carriage at the bottom of the line, which ultimately remained unharmed, but before that, passengers had jumped out of its windows.

The facility is operated by the municipal public transport company, and the company assured that its maintenance protocol was followed, and the prosecutor's office has already launched an investigation. The municipal authorities, in turn, stopped all such lines and ordered immediate inspections.
