Demonstrators in Nepal set fire to the parliament building in the capital Kathmandu, the legislature's spokesman Ekram Giri said, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.

“Hundreds of people took over the parliament building and set fire to the main building“, Giri said.

It was earlier reported that protesters had also set fire to the Supreme Court building, the residences of the president and prime minister, as well as members of the government and other politicians.

The unrest that broke out yesterday was caused by the blocking of a number of social media networks and by corruption, which protesters say is widespread in the country. Mass protests involving thousands of demonstrators have begun in the capital Kathmandu and several other major cities.

Prime Minister Sharma Oli resigned today, and major social media platforms in Nepal have resumed operations.
