The White House was cordoned off after the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah, the Washington Post reports.

“A large security perimeter was apparently set up around the White House,“ the article says.

The assassination attempt took place at a mass event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

Kirk was shot while answering a question about shootings of transgender people in schools.

According to witnesses, the bullet hit him in the neck.

Initially, it was reported that the activist survived, but was in critical condition.

His death was later confirmed by US President Donald Trump, who expressed condolences to the family of deceased.

The FBI is searching for the attacker.

Two suspects were detained but later released.

In 2012, Kirk founded Turning Point USA, an organization that promotes conservative values in educational institutions. He is known for his open-mic meetings at American universities. His social media accounts have a combined total of over 20 million followers. Videos in which he argues with Democratic Party supporters have attracted many views.

In his public statements, Kirk opposes the provision of military aid to Ukraine and advocates for the restoration of diplomatic relations with Russia. He actively supports Donald Trump's policy of "America First".
