Toyota and VW face catastrophic losses due to Trump

The two major automakers cite US import tariffs as the main reason for their losses

Japanese automaker Toyota Motor expects its net profit to fall by 34.9% in fiscal 2025 due to the policies of US President Donald Trump, who imposed high tariffs on imports. This was announced by the brand's press service.

The company forecasts a net profit of 3.1 trillion yen ($21.6 billion at the current exchange rate), which is 34.9% less than a year earlier. Operating profit will also fall by 20.8% to 3.9 trillion yen ($27.1 billion). The announcement also notes that the United States accounts for about 20% of Toyota's overseas sales.

But Toyota is not the only one to fall. Volkswagen Group's profit for the first quarter of 2025 after taxes amounted to 2.18 billion euros, which is 40.6% worse than the figure for the beginning of 2024.

The German automaker warned that the data for the whole of 2025 is likely to be at the lower end of the company's forecast. Previously, the group expected an operating profit margin of up to 6.5%. VW also blames Donald Trump and his import tariffs for the deterioration of the indicators.
