Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez believes that strengthening ties with China is in Europe's interest.
The Prime Minister is on a visit to Beijing, where he has already met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. “China must consider Europe, like Spain, as a place for investment, as well as a partner for the implementation of industrial projects“, the head of the cabinet said at a press conference broadcast on the government's website. “I firmly believe that it is in the interest of Spain and Europe to strengthen their ties with China“, he added.
According to him, one of the objectives of the trip to Beijing is to “promote economic relations, which must be much closer, healthier and more balanced”. Sanchez believes that "the current trade imbalance between Europe and China, as well as between Spain and China, is excessive" and that everything possible must be done to correct it. The prime minister also said that he plans to sign ten economic agreements during the visit.
Sánchez's current trip to China is his fourth in four years. In November 2025, Spain's King Felipe VI made his first state visit to China.
