By unilaterally imposing tariffs on Brazil, the US is grossly violating its commitments to the World Trade Organization (WTO). “By implementing the aforementioned tariffs, the US is grossly violating the fundamental commitments undertaken by this country to the WTO“, said a statement from the press service of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

They confirmed the readiness of the Brazilian leadership “for negotiations with the US and expressed hope that consultations will help resolve“ the contradictions. “The date and venue of the consultations should be agreed upon by both sides in the coming weeks“,”, the document notes.

US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 50% tariffs on imports of a number of Brazilian goods from August 1, explaining this measure with the need to overcome the trade deficit. Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva promised to respond in kind if Washington does not reconsider its decision by the end of July. The head of state expressed hope that the Brazilian delegation, led by Vice President Gerald Alkmin, will be able to achieve a revision of the tariffs through negotiations.
