Economic losses caused by natural disasters worldwide in the first half of 2025 amounted to $ 80 billion, which, if the trend continues, together with the expected losses for the second half of the year, could reach $ 150 billion annually. This forecast was made by analysts at the Swiss reinsurance company Swiss Re.

“According to our data, losses subject to compensation due to natural disasters reached $ 80 billion at the end of the first half of 2025, which is above the trend.“ “If the trend continues, insured losses from natural disasters this year could reach $150 billion at 2025 prices,“ the company said in the report.

The largest share of losses in 2025 so far is reported to be related to the January wildfires in Los Angeles, which caused $40 billion in damage.

According to the company, the biggest threat in terms of economic losses from natural disasters in the second half of 2025 is the Atlantic hurricane season. In the first half of 2025, hurricanes have already caused $31 billion in damage.
