Mayors and regional governors to actively help return children to school, called on Education Minister Krasimir Valchev a day after the start of the new school year.

He is on a tour of Sliven region, where over 6,000 children do not attend kindergartens and schools. 3,700 of them are abroad, bTV reports.

Galina Todorova is a teacher at the school in the Sliven village of Kamen. She is not officially part of the team for returning children to school, but she meets with parents daily.

"It is necessary when we do not have direct contact by phone, for example. We go, we talk, the mediator calls them social workers", she commented.

The mechanism for returning children to class has been working for the eighth year. The main difficulties are with students of Roma origin who do not speak Bulgarian well. There are additional classes for them.

"It is extremely important that children are included in kindergartens, especially those where Bulgarian is not spoken in the family, there is no educational environment", commented Krasimir Valchev, Minister of Education.

Last year, four students returned to class at the school in Kamen.

"There are children who are abroad with their parents, there is a problem with them", says Petar Petrov, a physics teacher.

The state's goal is for children not only to return to school, but also to stay in it.
