A new prosecutor to investigate the chief prosecutor and his deputies will be elected today, the Supreme Court of Cassation (SCC) announced.

The election of an “ad hoc“ prosecutor will be made through the Unified Court Information System (ECIS) on a random basis. He will be elected from among the judges included in the list approved by a decision of the General Assembly of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Cassation.

The term of office of a prosecutor for the investigation of crimes committed by the chief prosecutor cannot exceed two years, and after the expiration of this term he is reinstated to the position previously held.

The SCC has received a request from the Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov to attend the election.

BTA recalls that Judge Daniela Taleva of the Sofia City Court was the first magistrate randomly selected to investigate the Prosecutor General. The draw was made on July 7, 2023, among 22 judges who were approved under the new procedure adopted with the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code and the Criminal Procedure Act, in front of the media and in the presence of the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Cassation Lada Paunova.

Since December 7 this year, Taleva has not held this position due to the expiration of her mandate.
