The euro banknotes and euro coins put into circulation in our country are worth a total of over 6.7 billion euros as of January 6, 2026, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) announced, BTA reports. The euro in circulation in our country ensures the normal functioning of the payment system and the servicing of the economy and the population, the central bank states.
As of the reporting date, 5.9 billion leva in banknotes and coins remained in cash circulation, which represents 81 percent of withdrawn cash circulation in levs compared to the beginning of 2025.
As of February 6, 2026, the process of withdrawing banknotes and coins in levs and putting euro banknotes and euro coins into circulation is carried out in accordance with the current regulatory framework and the approved operational plans, the BNB specifies.
As of February 1, 2026, the euro is the only legal tender in Bulgaria, the bank recalls.
Compared to the end of the previous working week, levs in circulation decreased by approximately 1.8 billion leva, since as of 30 January, their total value amounted to 7.7 billion leva, BTA specifies.
At the same time, the euro banknotes and euro coins put into circulation in our country increased by approximately 600 million euros over the same period, as by January 30 their total value reached 6.1 billion euros.
Citizens can exchange leva at commercial banks and branches of "Bulgarian Post" until the end of 2026, and by mid-year the service will be provided without fees. The exchange of leva at the BNB will be carried out without fees indefinitely.
