Two fifth-graders from a Sofia school were admitted with intoxication after using nicotine pouches last week. Although the sale of such products to persons under 18 is prohibited, the children obtained them, and it is assumed that they were purchased from a nearby store.
One of the children was hospitalized in "Pirogov". After the incident, the school held talks and discussions with all classes and notified the relevant institutions – 1st District Administration, the Mayor of the “Sredets“ District, RHI and KZP - for the sale of nicotine substances in the region.
Specialists remind that while adults can tolerate nicotine, young and adolescent organisms react sharply to its use. Chewing nicotine pouches leads to a sharp increase in the concentration of the substance in the body, which can cause intoxication and serious health problems.
"Cigarettes are a routine means. If used routinely, it is well tolerated by people who are used to it. It is unpleasant for young and adolescent organisms," commented anesthesiologist Dr. Filip Abedinov.
According to parents, a clearer and more consistent preventive strategy is needed in schools, including information campaigns for children and clear consequences for those who import or use prohibited substances. The case once again raises the issue of easy access for adolescents to nicotine products and the need for strict control.
