Illegal slaughterhouses in two private properties in the village of Chiflik, Kardzhali municipality, were discovered during a joint operation of the Regional Directorate for Food Safety (RDFS) - Kardzhali and the Economic Police. This was reported by the BFSA on its website.

During the inspection, 80 ear tags from large ruminants were found. This means that tons of meat of unclear origin and without veterinary and sanitary control have left the two slaughterhouses. The origin and owners of the animals will be checked using the brand numbers.

The action in Kardzhali region took place less than two weeks after illegal slaughterhouses in Ihtiman, which had been operating for years, were discovered.

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) reminds that the storage and trade of meat without proven origin and without official veterinary control pose a risk to consumer health and are subject to strict sanctions.
