Member of the European Parliament Christian Vigenin held a meeting with representatives of the Bulgarian Association of Importers and Manufacturers of Homeopathic Medicinal Products (BAVPHLP) Dr. Persian Bukov and Dr. Nonna Petrova, at their initiative. The main topic of the conversation was the growing need for clear regulation and effective control over the production and distribution of homeopathic products at the European level.
The reason for the meeting is the ongoing negotiations between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on pharmaceutical legislation, according to which homeopathic remedies may be removed from the register of medicinal products. Dr. Bukov expressed concern that such a measure could lead to a lack of effective supervision of these products, which, in his opinion, poses risks to public health, especially in countries like Bulgaria, which is among the leaders in Europe in the use of homeopathic preparations.
For her part, Dr. Nonna Petrova stressed the importance of quality control and professional prescribing of homeopathic remedies by doctors. Representatives of the association also emphasized the potential of homeopathy to reduce the excessive use of antibiotics — a topic that remains the subject of scientific and medical debate.
Christian Vigenin thanked his interlocutors for the information provided and stated that he would familiarize himself with the proposal in detail, as well as its potential consequences. He stressed that his priority as a legislator is to create policies that guarantee the safety of citizens, especially in the field of healthcare.
The MEP expressed the opinion that homeopathic products should not remain out of the sight of regulatory authorities and stressed the importance of a science-based approach in making decisions regarding their legal regulation.
During the meeting, the parties agreed to maintain a dialogue on the topic and to hold a new meeting after taking concrete steps at European level.
