Why the average European can't buy a home

The reason is the acute housing crisis in the European Union

The acute housing crisis in the EU is preventing Europeans “with normal jobs“, including teachers, nurses and police officers, from finding their own home. This was acknowledged by the European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen at a press conference in Barcelona, broadcast live by the European Commission press service.

“For many years we have been watching how the housing crisis in Europe is escalating and we are not able to deal with it at European level,” he stressed. “Today we are in the throes of this crisis, in which normal people with normal jobs – nurses, teachers and police officers – cannot live among the people they serve because they cannot afford housing with their average salary. We see young people who cannot start their adult lives because they often live with their parents for 10 years longer than they would like.“

The European Commissioner called the situation “unbearable“ and stressed that this is a huge problem, but did not propose any specific measures to address the housing crisis.
