A bridge in Romania may collapse before it is put into operation

One of the biggest infrastructure scandals in our northern neighbor is about to happen

The construction of a bridge in the Romanian city of Arad costs nearly 30 million EUR. The facility was supposed to be put into operation this summer, but this is unlikely to happen, as there is a risk that it will collapse. The case is in danger of becoming one of the biggest scandals in the “Infrastructure“ sector in Romania since 1990.

The length of the new bridge over the Mures River is 295 meters. It is 23.5 meters wide. It has bike lanes and decorative LED lighting. Its construction is with cable-stayed cables – strong systems of steel cables. The facility is part of a multi-million euro project for a new public transport line, financed by European projects.

The main problems with the yet-to-be-opened bridge are vibrations that appeared even before the end of construction, which could actually lead to the bridge collapsing. The State Construction Inspectorate has found “deformations“ in the structure of the facility and concluded that it does not meet the required standards. The builder has been fined, and the opening of the bridge has been postponed for several months until all the dangers are eliminated. However, there are so many of them that a large part of the bridge will have to be rebuilt.
