A young driver ran over a 29-year-old man lying on the road and fled, the man died

The driver was detained for up to 24 hours

A 21-year-old man from Oryahovo has been detained on charges that he ran over a man lying on the road and fled the scene of the accident, the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs - Vratsa announced.

At around 02:15 on the night of February 9, the Regional Directorate - Oryahovo received a signal that a man was sitting on a sidewalk in the city with head injuries. The police patrol that arrived on the scene determined that the man was 29 years old and a resident of the city.

He was examined on the spot by a team from the Emergency Center - Oryahovo, after which he was transported to the hospital in Vratsa. A few hours later, a message was received that the man had died.

The investigative actions carried out revealed that a car driven by a 21-year-old from the same city had run over the man lying on the road, after which he left the scene of the accident. The driver was detained for up to 24 hours. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated for a crime under Art. 343, para. 1, letter “c”, in conjunction with Art. 342, para. 1 of the Criminal Code.

According to Art. 343, para. 1, letter “c”, if someone has caused death by their actions out of carelessness, the punishment is imprisonment for five to eight years, and in particularly serious cases - imprisonment for eight to 12 years. The reports of the Vratsa regional police for their work in 2025, published on the administration's website, indicate that last year at least 10 people died in traffic accidents in the region, with over 670 accidents occurring.
