Vera Alentova, who played the main role in the Oscar-winning Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears, has died

Russian actress Vera Alentova has died at the age of 83, TASS reported, citing information from the Pushkin Theater.

“Yes, it's true”, the agency's source answered journalists' questions about the actress's death.

Shortly before that, the Telegram channel Msk1.ru reported that Alentova had felt sick during a farewell ceremony with actor Anatoly Lobotsky. The actress was taken on a stretcher to an ambulance.

Vera Alentova (nee Bykova) was born on February 21, 1942 in Kotlas into a family of actors. After her father's early death, she lived with her mother in various cities across the USSR and graduated from high school in Barnaul.

She worked her first theater season in Orsk, and in 1961 she moved to Moscow, where she enrolled in the Moscow Art Theater and graduated in 1965. The same year she was accepted into the troupe of the Moscow Drama Theater "Pushkin", where she remained for the rest of her career.

She made her film debut in 1965. Alentova achieved national fame with her leading role in the Oscar-winning film "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears" (1979).

Since 2009, she and her husband Vladimir Menshov have been leading the acting and directing workshop at the S. A. Gerasimov Russian State University of Cinematography.
