Dogs save people from drowning in southern Spain VIDEO

Quadrupeds are trained, strong and resilient

A team of trained dogs use their strength, endurance and ability to swim against the current to save people from drowning on a popular beach in southern Spain, FOCUS reported.

Dressed in special life jackets, the dogs - mostly Labradors and Newfoundlands - patrol Levante Beach near Malaga with their handlers, who also accompany jet skis and lifeboats.

"They sense currents in the sea that humans can't," said dog trainer Miguel Sanchez.

The endurance and strength of dogs surpasses that of most people, according to Reuters.

Newfoundland dogs can swim nearly 6km and pull life rafts weighing up to three tonnes or carrying six people, while Labradors can tow 2.4 tonnes and use their keen sense of smell to locate missing people.
