Spanish authorities have closed the case into the accident that killed former Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva, after concluding that there was no basis for seeking criminal liability, gong.bg reports.

The incident occurred on July 3, 2025 in northern Spain, when their car left the road while overtaking. According to the investigation, the cause was a flat tire, as a result of which the car hit a guardrail and caught fire.

The judicial authorities in the province of Zamora are categorical that after analyzing all the evidence collected, there are no grounds for initiating criminal proceedings. According to information from The Athletic, the case was closed back in November after expert assessments by road accident specialists. However, the Castilla y León judiciary has clarified that the relatives of the deceased can seek their rights through civil proceedings.

The two brothers were travelling to Santander, from where they were due to take a ferry to the UK. Jota was due to join Liverpool for pre-season training, but on the advice of doctors he chose not to fly after undergoing lung surgery.

The tragedy comes just 11 days after Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Porto. The couple's funeral took place two days after the incident in Gondomar. The Portuguese left a significant mark on Liverpool, including a key contribution to the team's last championship season, when he scored 10 goals.
