Jos Verstappen, the father of Max Verstappen, suffered a serious accident during the “Wallonia“ Rally this morning. The 54-year-old former Formula 1 driver went off the track on the first stage on Sunday, after which his car overturned before coming to a complete stop. The organizers confirmed the incident, specifying that Verstappen and his co-driver Jasper Vermeulen are unharmed after what happened on stage 13, reports sportal.bg.
The “Wallonia“ Rally is the third round of the Belgian championship and is held entirely on asphalt. Verstappen started the race with a new co-driver after his title partner Renault Jamoul suffered a fractured ankle earlier in the week. The two were Belgian champions last season.
After Saturday's stages, Jos was in third place, but was subsequently given a 40-second penalty for speeding in a transition section, which dropped him to 17th in the overall standings.
