Sporting Lisbon showed that it is the classiest team in Portugal and won the title for the second year in a row. In the final round of the championship, the "lions" entered with an equal number of points with their city rival Benfica. However, they achieved the home victory they needed with 2:0 over Vitoria Guimaraes and made the result of the match between Sporting Braga and Benfica (1:1) of no particular importance, BTA reports.
Pedro Gonçalves scored in the 55th minute and Victor Goqueres (right) in the 83rd. Goqueres finished as the top scorer of the championship with 39 goals. Benfica star Vangelis Pavlidis followed him, who also managed to increase his tally after scoring in the 63rd minute in a 1-1 draw away to Braga. The capital team were in the role of catchers, after Rodrigo Salazar gave Braga the lead with a penalty goal midway through the first.
The hosts finished the match with a man less after Joao Moutinho's second yellow card in the 66th minute, but even with a numerical advantage, Benfica failed to make a turnaround.
In the final standings, Sporting finished as champions with 82 points. Benfica is in second place with 80, and Porto is third with 71 points. Sporting Braga finished in fourth place with 66 points, while the fifth place, which ensures a place in the Conference League qualifiers, went to the team Santa Clara from the Azores.
The title for Sporting is the 21st in the club's history, while Benfica finished in second place for the 31st time. The "Eagles", however, remain at the top of the championship trophies with 38.
