Union Saint-Gilloise ended their 90-year wait for the Belgian championship title, but had to endure a nervous afternoon before beating visiting Gent 3-1 to finish three points ahead of second-placed Club Brugge, who drew 1-1 with Antwerp, BTA reported.
The Brussels club have been agonisingly close in the last two seasons and faced the potential for another disaster on the final day before substitute Promise David came on in the second half to score two goals in seven minutes and secure their title triumph.
Union started the final round of the season on Sunday with a point ahead of defending champions Club Brugge. Formed in 1897, Union won 11 league titles between 1904 and their last in 1935, but fell into serious decline in the early 1960s after being relegated, finding themselves in the fourth division of Belgian football some two decades later.
But a revival sparked by investment from Tony Bloom, the owner of English Premier League club Brighton, saw Saint-Gilloise promoted to the second division and then promoted to the top flight in 2021 after a 48-year absence.
They finished second in their first season back, and then came within minutes of the title before it was stripped of them in a dramatic finale to the 2022-23 campaign. Last year they were second again, one point behind Club Brugge, but finally crossed the finish line.
