Xiaomi convicts journalists for spreading fake news

This legal precedent comes at a time when Xiaomi is aggressively expanding its presence in the electric car market

Chinese technology giant Xiaomi, which shook the automotive world with its electric sedan SU7, has achieved a landmark victory in court against the spread of disinformation. The company's legal department announced its triumph in a case against the popular local media outlet AutoReport (known in China as “AutoReport Automotive News“). The magistrates' decision is categorical: the media outlet damaged Xiaomi's business reputation and image by systematically publishing false and humiliating information.

During the legal proceedings, it was established that AutoReport used its channels on multiple online platforms to circulate materials devoid of factual basis. The court emphasized that the articles contained distorted facts and a frankly offensive tone, which directly violated the company's legal right to protect its public image. This decision is a clear signal to the “yellow media“ in China that aggressive and unverified clickbait can have serious financial consequences.

As retribution for the damage caused, the defendant is obliged not only to immediately remove all controversial publications, but also to issue an official public apology to Xiaomi. The most serious blow, however, is the financial penalty - the media must pay compensation in the amount of 5 million yuan, which at the current exchange rate is equivalent to approximately 616,000 euros.

This legal precedent comes at a time when Xiaomi is aggressively expanding its presence in the electric vehicle market and is demonstrating zero tolerance for attempts to manipulate public opinion through fake news. It seems that Lei Jun and his team are determined to defend the brand's positions not only with innovations on the road, but also with an iron legal hand in the courtroom.
