US President Donald Trump signed a presidential decree today to deploy National Guard troops to the city of Memphis, Tennessee, as part of his campaign to fight crime in major American cities governed by Democratic representatives, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.
The US President said that this operation will be a "repeat" of the action carried out in the capital Washington, despite criticism from Democrats who accuse him of authoritarianism and militarization of public security issues.
The operation in Memphis "will involve the National Guard, the FBI" and other federal agencies, Trump said during a ceremony at the White House, explaining his decision with the "crime" that he said was raging in that city.
"We'll probably take on Chicago after that," he added, after taking aim at this large Democratic-run city for several weeks.
The Republican president claims that the deployment of the National Guard in the capital, Washington, and before that in Los Angeles, has helped those two cities deal with crime among immigrants, repeating his usual clichés on the issue.
Memphis is a predominantly black city in Tennessee, which is governed by a Democratic mayor, which in turn is governed by a Republican governor, AFP reports.
