Virginia's top prosecutor has resigned from his post after President Donald Trump called for his removal from office, according to an internal email seen by Reuters and a person familiar with the matter, BTA reported.
Eric Siebert, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA), informed his staff of his resignation shortly after Trump told reporters at the White House that he had lost confidence in him.
"Tonight I submitted my resignation as acting U.S. Attorney for EDVA" he wrote. "Over the past eight months, I have had the pleasure of leading the best and most exceptional Justice Department employees who care deeply about our nation and our community in the Eastern District of Virginia." "Thank you for the lessons you have taught me, the sacrifices you have made, and the pursuit of justice you fight for every day," he added. "Siebert could not immediately be reached for comment, Reuters reported. "I want him gone," Trump told reporters on Friday. Before Trump's public comments on Friday night, administration officials had informed Siebert that the White House could fire him, the two sources added.
