Dutch police used water cannon to disperse anti-migration protesters gathered in The Hague after they began throwing stones and bottles at police officers, Reuters and the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.

A local government official said that the group of demonstrators against whom the water cannon was used broke away from the main protest to block a road.

The anti-migration protest, which is taking place about a month before parliamentary elections in the kingdom, is against asylum seekers and for fairer housing policies in the Netherlands. Local media reported that thousands joined the protest.

The AP reported, citing local media, that some of the protesters set fire to a police car and attacked an office of the centrist political party "Democrats-66".

"Keep your hands off the political parties. If you think you can intimidate us, good luck. We will never let extremist rioters take away our beautiful country," party chairman Rob Jetten said on the "Ex" social network.

The leader of the far-right Freedom Party, Geert Wilders, was invited to the protest by the organizations, but did not arrive.

The politician condemned the violence. "Blocking the road and using force against the police is completely unacceptable," he wrote in "Ex".
