Bangladesh has recorded a record number of dengue deaths in a single day - 12 people died of it within 24 hours, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Since the beginning of the year, the total number of dengue deaths has reached 179. Over 2,000 people are being treated in medical facilities across the country. The deaths are spread across different regions. The number of infections since the beginning of the year has exceeded 48,000.

Doctors warn that the situation is deteriorating faster than in 2024, when 575 people died of dengue in Bangladesh. Experts are calling for active measures to control the population of mosquitoes that transmit the disease. They also stress the need to strengthen the preparedness of health facilities to handle large numbers of patients.

Dengue is common in countries with tropical and subtropical climates. The virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that in recent years dengue has become a rapidly spreading infection in all WHO regions. The number of cases is estimated at 100-400 million per year. According to the organization, more than 80% of cases are mild or asymptomatic. However, the virus can cause acute respiratory illness that can develop into a potentially fatal complication.
